Diablo II: Resurrected - Change Or No Change Survey: The RESULTS!

If you did not take part in the survey yet, I recommend you doing so before reading the results, so we get a fresh, unaffected opinion. Here is the link to the survey, it contains 25 questions: https://forms.gle/jFphMWfK2y9SQy5A7

    ****\*

    Hello everybody,

about two weeks ago I posted a survey to find out what changes Diablo 2 fans want to see in D2:R, and what changes they don't want to see. Over 4300 people participated, now it's time for the results!

I put a lot work into the analyses and created a PDF file with many fancy charts, here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bZDRPXHVjNCh5mrGBwlkyG1JOWYfxLg-/view?usp=sharing

tl;dr: Even though there are very controversial opinions on a few changes (e.g. optional personal loot, easier way to respec), the majority of the Diablo 2 fans want to see most of the in the survey mentioned changes. Even pretty impactful changes like balancing spells or adding new content are welcomed by most of the fans.

    -

I am looking forward to hear your thoughts about the results.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Creature concept art - Arach Giant Spider - Diablo II Fan Remake

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:43 AM PDT

Unpopular opinion: I dearly miss item tetris. Why? I'm convinced that item art is always going to be better.

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:33 PM PDT

With the reveal of D2R something really stood out to me — the gorgeous item art!

Here's a quick comparison for reference.

To me, it actually seems unlikely we will ever get item art this gorgeous from a inventory system that uses items as tiles (rather than the old tetris system) because it forces the artists to awkwardly fit the artwork for every item into the same portrait orientation rectange, regardless of item size or shape.

And when every item takes up the same space, and don't vary in size relative to one another, they of course don't feel like they have a physical size, or are physical items at all — which breaks immersion and reduces any sense of realism connecting these items to the game world — it becomes just a UI, for collecting icons (not items). It is very arcadey compared to the complexity and depth we've come to expect from the RPG genre. Its part of what makes items feel compelling.

We end up with long items (eg staves) fading out off the side of this rectange— only showing their ornate top end, and items that would comfortably fit a square aspect ratio (eg gloves, boots, helms, and some shields) are squahed in and sit hanging / floating in the middle of this space at smaller sizes than would otherwise be possible if the art was allowed a more natural shape to fit within.

I really miss the old tetris inventory — I really think the art (and immersion) will always be better.

Grinding D2 vs Grinding D3: What I love about both

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:35 PM PDT

Let me start by saying I don't want this to turn into a D2 vs D3 thread (maybe it's inevitable) but it should be noted that I really love both games and they are vastly different and both undeniably have their strong points.

My experience with D3 end game is mainly grinding HC ladder grift levels of whatever flavor I'm feeling until my main character dies and then I stop. I usually come back to D3 every few seasons to see the changes and get back on the saddle (really excited about the follower patch I've heard good things about).

    What I love about D3

    • A competitive PVE ladder
      • D2 just cannot hold a candle to the competitive side of D3. D2's ladder is only based on level and not the actual power of your character, so this really means "who did more xp runs" vs D3 which is "who can play their character the best and who optimized their build the most", and you feel that there is actually a competitive spirit behind getting to that next rank on the grift leaderboard. My highest is 6th on the HC necro ladder before dying a couple seasons ago! :D
    • Infinitely scaling difficulty
      • A big issue with D2 is once you reach a decent power level with a meta build, you can already beat most of the hardest enemies in the game, unless they're immune to your element in hell which let's be honest, just feels bull shit. Sure maybe you can't solo the ubers or something like that, but there is no D2 parallel to grifts in terms of being able to test your newly found strength and see yourself pushing forward easily. Once you get that big ticket item or complete your set and you hit a massive powerspike, it's very satisfying to be farming the next torment or crush grift levels you previously couldn't. The customizable difficulty in D3 is unparalleled.

I recently got back into D2 following the D2R announcement after not playing for over a decade, and I'm having a ton of fun playing an MF cold sorc and an elemental druid (tried summoning and was painfully reminded why it's terrible :S)

    What I love about D2

    • Gear progression
      • The issue with D3 gear progression is it doesn't take a long time to get your full set and then you're really just chasing better versions of the same gear you already had, which granted, isn't a foreign concept to D2, but in D2 it seems like there is always going to be a new piece of gear you could be working towards. You could play D2 for years and still never have an enigma/botd/etc... Now that's not to say I am defending the ridiculously low drop rates of the HRs, but at the same time, there's something satisfying about being able to chase that next piece of gear and it can take you weeks to be able to find that eth armor that finally rolls 4os for your fortitude or find the perfect trade and it gives you a nice power spike. Once fully geared in D3 after a couple weeks of playing I burn out very quickly, which leads me to my next point about D2...
    • Higher varied farming locations
      • Sure the farming may be boring at times, I'm not defending baal runs as the most fun thing in the world, but it's much more fun to farm different locations. If you need normal weapon/armor, you can farm cows. If you are hoping to get lucky with some HRs, you can do some LK runs. General MFing with Meph/Baal/Diablo runs or AT/Pits, low-mid runes you can farm the countess, and for keys for uber tristram you can farm Countess/Summoner/Nilothak. With D2 there are quite a few more avenues of farming for end game whereas D3 is just bounties and rifts/grifts (which feel just about the same to play, only slight differences). Granted bounties are quite varied, but there just isn't as much targeted farming in D3 as there is in D2.

Both games have their quirks and both games have high points in what they did great. Let's hope that D4 can take the best parts of both worlds and make an amazing game. <3

Bring SSF and save D3 please.

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:18 PM PDT

We are getting new solo improvements. It's nice. If we also get SSF. It would be awesome.

D3 offers nothing but leaderboard pushing for endgame. It's not bad but also not fair for solo players. Current D3 forcing you to play in groups.

Paragon = Power. Easiest way to get paragon? 4 player groups. Legendary Gems = Power. Best way to upgrade them for augmenting? 4 player groups. Because you can't reach as high as solo player. Also you have to play meta character/build to find group. Otherwise you are nothing.

If they can add SSF and cap paragon to 800 they can save D3. I wasn't playing since Necromancer release. Tried the Season 20. It was okay for 5 days. Then I quit. Because I was forced to join groups to push ladder. I couldn't augment and upgrade my gems any further and you can't race paragonwise with people who plays 15 hours in 4 man groups. It's not fair. What's the point of playing more if you can't push ladder as solo player. This is not World of Warcraft. Why we are forced to do everything in groups?

    Devs please. Think about this.

A purple edit I did of the D2R dark wanderer artwork, always thought that color would suit the looming death and despair underlying his inner struggle and the journey east, turning to demonic red when Diablo takes over.

(D1) Monsters to be aware of?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:06 PM PDT

Hi, I'm playing D1 for the first time.

I know I should be aware of Black Deaths as every time they hit me they'll take away 1 HP permanently.

Are there any other permanent things I should be looking out for?

    Thanks!

Why i don't think the final class will be a paladin or any melee class.

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 10:59 AM PDT

The paladin in D2 was a fan and personal favorite, but it was also very limited to diablo 2 gameplay restrictions. It was essentially a melee class with a few powers and passives for the most part. With d2 only really allowing for two skills at a time, its gameplay is much more limited in scope than D3 or D4. In D3, you had 6 skills that could essentially compliment each other and with the right gear could synergize into a build. This is how D4 is shaping up as well. So a paladin as the next class would either be extremely limited by comparison or changed beyond recognition.

The other reason I don't think the final class is a paladin or melee class is because in a lot of ways, d4 is returning to its roots. We already have a melee, caster, archer, and shifter class available with two of these classes going back to D1. But what we don't have is a summoner. Which is just as much a staple to this series as any of the rest of these.

Personally, if they are gonna bring in a class from D3 like the Witch Dr, I'd like to see something new from the summoner class. Like an occultist or demon tamer. That could be a lot of fun.

Its not outside the realm of possibility that they will introduce another melee character, but it just seems redundant with barbarian already in play and no summoner in sight.

Looking for Screenshot of “Bob” executioner sword

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:28 AM PDT

Back in diablo2's hay day there was a blue executioner sword on HCCL that was a rare blue colored exec that was simply named "Bob Executioner sword". Now I have never seen this sword it was around when Soul Saw was the best exec. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this mythical sword before? It's been 10+ years and I still think about this sword. There was rumors that it belonged to a toon named King AF_IIiIiIii and was used to kill multiple chars on top of the ladder. It was like the holy grail of swords with people seeing it but I have never once seen a screenshot.

    That is all.

    Fun build hypothetical: Diablo 2

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:18 PM PDT

Just a shower thought I had. Maybe it's been done with modding but I don't know:

If you could create a character and choose your three skill trees (as the whole tree) from any of the seven classes, totally mix and match, what three trees would you try out and what would be your strategy with them? Can be min-max related, flavor related, or whatever other purpose. What weapons and setup would you rock? Would you name your hybrid class something new?

Who is Diablo II Resurrected for

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 08:49 PM PDT

The title. Personally, I feel like the game is largely for the D2 fans who haven't played in YEARS and would like to have a hit of nostalgia via a modernized version of the game. This way it looks the way you remember (compared to the pixelated reality of the original game). Along these lines, I think the bulk of these people would like to see qol changes and some rebalancing so they can try a build that wasn't feasible previously. I know that there is also a group of people who think that the game is for the purists and the active D2 community because those are the people who have kept the game alive for 20+ years. What are your thoughts? Debate, argue, duel in PVP for all I care! Just discuss!

Season 23 Idea: Is Asheara's Set finally viable?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 12:49 PM PDT

    Asheara's Vestments

The set consists of four pieces, all of which are required to complete it.

    Asheara's Custodian (Pauldrons)
    Asheara's Finders (Boots)
    Asheara's Pace (Pants)
    Asheara's Ward (Gloves)

    Set Bonus

    +100 All Resistances (2 pieces)
    +20% Life (3 pieces)
Followers occasionally come to aid (4 pieces)

The latter bonus gives a small chance on hit for all three followers (two if one is already present) to teleport to the player and assist them in combat for approximately 30 seconds. This works even in multiplayer games. This effect has an internal cooldown (between 15 and 30 seconds), so in theory (and in intense combat) one can have all three of them summoned nearly all of the time. Teleported followers fully benefit from skill choices and equipment, functioning exactly as if they were actual followers of the Nephalem.

This sounds like it finally has a chance of being good, with the hardest part being finding a way to fit it into a build. You need to slot 3 parts + RoRG, and you'd probably want to combine that with a 6 piece set. A cursory look identified this working with Immortal Kings, Innas, Zunimassas and Tal Rashas 6 piece sets; but that also doesn't consider things like zDPS builds that don't use full sets.

Maybe this set still isn't worth the gear slots it takes up, but maybe it's at least good enough to have some fun on T16s? Some thoughts on all of this:

    • This could make Unity viable in groups (75% DR with 4 rings equipped)
    • Do multiple oculus rings proc this way? Do overlapping rings stacks?
    • 2-3 extra cheat deaths can't be ignored, especially in hardcore
    • Follower skills got buffed to the point they're actually useful with 25k+ main stat
    • Obviously all the emanate stuff like Nemesis Bracers, Flavor of Time, Gloves of Worship, Homing Pads, etc...

I think it's worth looking at; perhaps getting all of that might make up for the 3 slots you devote to Asheras? At least for some build?

Hoping some of the bigger theorycrafters prod at this concept, I'd love to see it in action whether or not it has a use in meta comps.

what lod patch will d2 remastered be?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 08:47 AM PDT

    Hi diablo gamers,

I played the game for years during .08, .09 and some of 1.1, but left because they killed the nova sorc. Does anyone know what patch D2R is going to be? the original? .08 before they made all the item balances in .09? or the newest patch, years later?

Unpopular opinion: Diablo 1 had a better atmosphere than Diablo 2

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:34 PM PDT

I am playing Diablo 2 for the first time ever. I am on Act 4 so pretty far into the game.

I think Diablo 1 has the best atmosphere out of these 2 games. Diablo 2 is better gameplay wise but i find Diablo 1 just so much more tense and engaging

Diablo 1 created a pretty convincing image of a world swallowed by corruption. Diablo 2 has less of that. I like the meaningful interaction with the villagers. You can see they are just ordinary folk trying to survive the evil times.
