Diablo IV Quarterly Update - Q4 December 2020

Excited after reading the new Diablo 4 quarterly update.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:33 AM PST

I just wanted to say that after reading the new update I am VERY excited about the game. I feel like they've actually listened to our feedback and the changes they have made look fucking awesome.

I gotta admit I was more than a little cynical about this game at first but the way the dev team has handled things with the constant updates and feedback, etc has completely changed my opinion. D4 team you are doing great stay on track and this game will be fucking sweet!

    Is Diablo 3 any good?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:42 PM PST

I never played Diablo 3 but I read a lot of people were disappointed with it. I like ARPGs and have played some Grim Dawn and the Sacred games (1 & 2).

    What about Set Items?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:38 PM PST

The latest D4 development blog has quite a bit on itemization, including plenty of references to systems that have been removed from the game. However, Set Items were not mentioned at all. This seems a curious but likely intentional oversight; it is unclear whether that is due to them being completely removed or simply not fitting in well with the current itemization plans.

With the information we know now, how do you imagine Set items will be implemented in D4? Are we going to see class specific sets, general sets, or both? Are Set items absolutely critical in an ARPG?

    I'm curious what people think.

What do we know about trade in D4?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:16 PM PST

Itemization looks like a step in the right direction but... i feel like the game would still feel kinda empty without an economy based on trades.

Question on With Doctor Spirit Barrage build

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:10 PM PST

Hi guys, currently playing Witch Doctor and running Spirit Barrage build and I'm using the knife that changes the damage so it builds up instead of doing instant damage.

I've done a bit of reading and seen that the damage will pop when it either runs it's duration, runs out of range, or a fourth spirit is summoned. I just wanted to ask then - is the tactic to keep spamming Spirit Barrage to continuously pop the damage? Or do you just summon three and then use another skill in the interim?

Quarterly Update: "we think players of all skill levels benefit from not having to scrutinize every single item that drops to see if it might be an upgrade for them"

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:06 PM PST

Philosophically, we like the clarity of analysis afforded by clearly understood item tiers. In other words, we think players of all skill levels benefit from not having to scrutinize every single item that drops to see if it might be an upgrade for them—blue Magic items are good, but yellow Rares are usually better.

This claim about design intention is false and contradicted by every proceeding line in the article.

Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique are all on the same tier now.

All 3 staffs—Magic, Rare, Legendary—have the same damage.

The only difference is secondary stats, whether you want a larger number of affixes with lower range, or smaller number of affixes with higher range.

Loot filter is gone. The "benefit from not having to scrutinize every single item" is gone. So you have to personally look at every single one of the hundreds of items per hour, instead of the dozens of items per hour filtered by the orange tag.

This is basically equivalent to making every single item that drops in D3 an ancient, but with the number of the affixes varying, and the affix range depending on the number of affixes.

In terms of the time needed to be spent on "scrutiniz[ing]" items, this is also equivalent to removing all item colors, so requiring people to personally scrutinize every single item that drops on the basis of its stats.

    Make a loot filter.
