Bosses of D4 better not call me on their evil walkie talkies

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 03:09 PM PST

If anything comes from this post, it's that it's a talking point I wonder for what D4 could do to do this better. Especially with a character as nuanced as Lilith. I'm no game designer, but I'm curious what others might think is a good way to capture the spirit of our beloved demons, tell a good story, keep us moving along nicely objective to objective, and what ideas there are to make this achievable in an ARPG genre. That being said...

Azmodan's demonic phone calls where he frequently appears to tell me his evil plan and how I will never defeat him make him seem.. like a joke.

Diablo portrait dialogue is arguably more guilty of this: "You may have beat the previous step in my evil plan that I said you wouldn't, but it matters little, NEPHALEEEM! For you cannot stop my Hell Rifts!" wink wink

Me: "Oh, uhh.. I guess I better go do that next. Thanks Diablo!"

I understand their arrogance in these moments, thinking they get this win in the bag. But this method of story telling (more like holding my hand telling me where to go) is even ridiculous on lesser characters like Magda: "It matters not that you found the last piece of the sword, I'm already killing the most beloved protagonist of the franchise in his cabin as we speak!" evil cackle

Diablo spoke one phrase in D2 and the phrase still quakes in my bones to this day: "Not even death can save you from me."

I'll find my way through the game, so I say, don't force screentime on Lilith or other cherished Demons of the franchise just to point me to my next objective. Make sure the time they have when we interact with them is powerful, meaningful, and arguably most important, true to what they represent as characters in the franchise.

Tl;dr I'm no game designer, but I wonder how antagonists could be better represented in the story and furthering the plot, without using evil walkie talkies in an isometric ARPG.

Diablo 2 Upscaled - The Rogue Encampment (playable demo, first version)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 03:05 PM PST

I've made this "playable demo" to see what D2 would look like if it was upscaled (remastered using this machine learning technique).

The tool used for upscaling is called ESRGAN, the used models are FArtface for the assassin and Manga109Attempt for everything else.

The demo is a web app, anyone can try it (you are encouraged to!). The only requirement (that I know of) is WebGL, which should be supported by default by most modern browsers.

There is some data overhead - about 50 MB must be first downloaded (you'll see a simple loading screen).

For best experience use FHD screen and resize to fullscreen (F11).

    Here you go:

    https://quiet-springs-45295.herokuapp.com

I know there are many things not working - the town is a carpet the character walks on, so you can walk through walls. There are no shadows. There are no NPCs etc.

Please keep in mind that this a first version, just something to share with you guys. There are no plans to make this into a full game.

The next version will have NPCs and inventory / items.

Diablo 4 Should Ditch D3's Handling of Boss Fights

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 09:35 PM PST

IMO one of the best things about Diablo 1 and 2 is the element of a big bad boss surprising you right as you kick open a door. From the famous "Ah fresh meat" moment in Diablo 1, to opening the big bloody door in the Catacombs in D2 to find Andariel rushing at you, the action is seamless and never stops to make sure you are ready.

It really bugged me in Diablo 3 with the "ready checks" before bosses... It was such a tension killer! This is made worse in fights like Diablo where halfway through the fight you literally cannot control your character and black bars appear on the sides of your screen while you get ready for the next phase of the fight.

Most people correctly criticize how dumb Azmodan is for being a cartoon scooby doo villain... but I think I could forgive the game more if right before I fought him the game didn't pause my character to let me know "Hold up, sure you're ready? There's a boss here!" It just totally kills the whole mood and feel of the game!

Idk if I am articulating what im trying to get across well, but I hope my points well taken. ....Thoughts?

    The Butchers Quest?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:30 AM PST

How do you get the Butchers quest in Diablo 1? I looked at the wiki and it was helpful but is there a time frame you need to get it before it becomes unavailable to you?

    Rainbow Goblin Hunting Routes?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 03:53 PM PST

As of 2020, I have yet to find any updated guides on YouTube, Iceyveins, and even Diablo forum on farming for Rainbow Goblins and or Goblins. I've been farming for the cosmic wings since December 23, and obviously have realized the difficulty of obtaining them (I'm at around 80 goblins). The latest guide on YouTube I could find was uploaded in early August of 2019. Just curious but is there any new / updated and more efficient routes to run now or are they pretty much the same as before?

    Routes that I run:

    - Act 1

    - Northern Highlands (I do not search Leoric's Hunting Grounds)

    - Southern Highlands w/ Cave of the Moon Clan (I do not search all of it, only until I find the cave.)

    - The Royal Crypts

    - Cathedral Levels w/ Passage (I either search 1 or 2 and not fully at all until I find Leoric's Passage.)

    - The Weeping Hollow

    Act 2

    - Ancient Waterways (Western 1/2 and Eastern 1/2)

    Act 3

    - Bridge of Korsikk (If I get Icefalls I don't search, Caverns I search.)

    Act 5

    - Pandemonium 1 and 2

In conclusion is this still a good route? Is this outdated or is one of these not worth searching/ or is there one I should add to my routes. If so which ones? I have heard some small things like you can just run a map like Weeping Hollow over and over and then reset (Just keep running one map over and over). And last but not least, for those of you who have the wings, how long did it take you to farm for them, how many goblins? (I ask just for some data, and knowledge)

    Diablo 3 and ultrawide monitor

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 03:21 AM PST

I know that DE does not support ultrawide monitors, but I'm having the following issue: even if I set windows to use my monitor in a 16:9 aspect (with black bars on the sides), no matter which resolution input on d3, it scales up to fill the monitor and distort the graphics.

    Any workarounds around this?

A few endagme questions from a returning player from the console launch of Reaper of Souls.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:37 AM PST

So I played RoS when it first came out on Xbox. I leveled about 4 characters to max (can't remember if it was 70 back then), never getting into the endgame too much. For reference, seasons were nonexistant and GRs were fairly new to the game. I don't think Torment went past 8-10. I just decided to get back into it once I got a super high level build in Borderlands 3 and the content was starting to dry up for me.

I got the Eternal collection on PS4 and in less than 3 days on a fresh account I got my season 19 Barb to level 70 last night and completed the first 2 chapters of my seasonal journey.

    So... questions:

The spike in power once I got my first 4 pieces of Wrath of the Wastes is insane. Is that enough alone to be able to instantly buff my difficulty to T4 to finish my Chapter 4 journey and get the last 2 Wrath pieces? I did a T1 Nephalem and I was able to melt mobs pretty quick but I was a little squishy still and also resource starved even when using Fury generators where possible.

How good is the Wastes set compared to other sets later on? It seems like it's going to be a long time before I get anything I can equip over this set. Do seasonal sets usually last the season or is it just something to get me started?

What is the primary method for obtaining new equippable gear? Does it mostly drop from Rifts or do you mostly get it via the Cube? Some other way?

I guess my next steps are to farm my endgame crafting items and try to work towards getting my Bul-Kathos' weapons. If I'm not pushing for leaderboards, what's my end game? Just see how high of a GR I can hit before the season ends?

Any additional tips would be nice. I've been watching some youtube videos about the endgame but I'm sure there's a lot of things I still don't know.

    Talk about Retro in DIABLO

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:04 AM PST

So I’m listening to the Diablo 2 soundtrack at work (because it’s awesome) but I discover something terrible

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:13 AM PST

The short piece called "Coda" is a complete rip off of Chopin's Prelude in C Minor (No.20).

I'm not sure how I feel about this act of blatant plagiarism.
