Found a funny thing in the user interface of Diablo

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:37 AM PST

Disclaimer: I mean 'funny' like 'odd' or 'weird'. This post will not launch your sides into orbit.

I recently discovered something funny in the user interface of the original Diablo. Please take a look at this picture. Note the reflection on the mana and life orbs, compared to the belt which they are supposed to be reflecting. I drew the red circles because it will make my image look more 'researchy'.

Where's this reflection coming from? Browsing through the screenshots on Diablo Evolution, an amazing page for anyone interested in the development of Diablo, it turns out the reflection of a leftover from an older build. To be more precise, a build from February 1996 (or later), which Diablo Evolution dubs 'Alpha 2'. This is the first build with mana and life orbs (although mana is on the left and life on the right) and the type of belt we still see reflected in the orbs in the final build. It wouldn't be until the Beta build that the new potions and scrolls belt would be implemented.

Don't know about you, but I kind of liked discovering this little tidbit in such an old game.

Runewords recipes should be written in the world to be found like rewards/Easter eggs

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:08 PM PST

Classic Runewords should return in a balanced iteration that makes sense for Diablo 4. Their "recipes" (correct combination and order of runes to be inserted into an item) should be written into the world itself like Easter eggs.

For example in a cave the words could be written on a wall as part of a caveman-style cave painting. It could be on some rock in the middle of a desert or in a certain building in a certain town. Perhaps some NPC could say it amongst their normal dialogue but it be non-obvious. Maybe one only appears in a certain puddle that is only there when it is raining? (Make use of weather effects)

This solves the issue of needing to look online outside of the game for how to do Runewords, and also gives us something exciting to look for that isn't items

Some could be easy to find, some very difficult to find. They should be implemented in a variety of ways so we aren't just looking at every wall in every cave trying to find them. Reward the observant and the creative

    Bring charms back.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:58 PM PST

Love the sound, love the visuals, hate D2LOD's concept. Small charms, large charms and grand charms, everyone would try to grab it the moment it drops.

D3 suffered from lack of loot variety, making the game very mundane quickly. In D2LOD we had many types of loot to look out for, bring that back to D4. It would be nice to bring back the charm/tarot card UI that was abolished during D3's development.

I composed a track, inspired by the awesome D4 cinematic. I hope you like it.

Can we please have a 2020 alternative UI for D3?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:18 PM PST

Look at D4's "work in progress UI" its sooooooooo much smaller, cleaner and lets me klick in the centre bottom part of the screen without hitting any buttons. or just give me the console version of D3 UI.

Should spells be based on weapon damage like martial skills?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:25 AM PST

This is something I haven't seen a lot of discussion on, so I'm trying to bring some attention to it and see what the community's opinion is on it.

In Diablo II, there was a clear separation of spells and martial skills, mainly because spells didn't scale off weapon damage, but also because attack speed and faster cast rate were different modifiers.

Diablo III made it homogeneous by making basically every skill a martial skill, personally, I didn't like it because I thought it made no sense for my wizard to find a white bow with no magical properties and that bow made my Arcane Orb do more damage, makes me feel like casters are reskinned martial characters.

Diablo IV seems to be heading in the same direction as D3 so I made a Straw Poll to see how the community feels about it and give feedback to design team.

    Diablo 4 Currency

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 09:48 PM PST

Sorry if there has been some mention of this and I have not come across it yet. But I just wanted to mention how important i believe a meaningful currency system is. After picking diablo 2 again since the ladder reset I have noticed how difficult it is to actually trade item for item and obviously others have too. So now it looks like the most commonly used currency in trading is actually a third party website's forum currency! Which I suspect the average gamer would not put the effort into using. I think this really illustrates the importance of having a meaningful currency if there is going to be a trading system.

Looking to play my first Diablo game. Should I start with Diablo I, Diablo II, or Diablo III?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 05:42 PM PST

As the title says, I'm looking to play my first Diablo game. The Diablo IV gameplay looked really promising so I've decided to take a look at the rest of the series. Right now though I'm kind of leaning away from Diablo III mostly because I just find it really ugly; the cartoony aesthetic really isn't doing it for me, but if you guys really think it's worth a try over the first two games then I'll give it a chance.

D3 season should be drastically reduced

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 08:35 PM PST

It's pretty obvious that the player base falls off well before the end of a season. I would enjoy having a new season (with new perks) to look forward to more often. Maybe an unpopular opinion.

(Diablo 4) What if there is no more light in the world? (Theory/Idea)

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:26 PM PST

So Blizzard wants to make Diablo 4 dark and i have been wondering about what other classes and stuff could be added in the game.

So what if the world in Diablo 4 is stripped from light? Specifically Holy light.

The Paladins, Priests and Crusaders in Zakarum no longer have their light to guide them and to help them in combat, they are now without power, they are now just basic warriors.

Light has been completely vanished from the world.

Some of the people in Zakarum begin to get hopeless, depressed and afraid of what is to come and they are very dissapointed in the light and they feel betrayed by it.

So some Paladins, Priests and Crusaders turn to the dark side inorder to get power from there out of desperation to get atleast some power back, even if its dark.

If they cannot have the power of the light then they will get the power of the darkness to help them out instead, out of desperation for power or a petty move for some. The light has abandoned them and they are dissapointed about that so they turn to the darkness to become Dark Knights. Ofcourse these Dark Knights are shunned and exiled by the Zakarum for betrayal and so these Dark Knights, under a leader who is a new NPC, made their own clan somewhere else.

This could perhaps give us a Dark Knight class, someone who is kind of like a Paladin/Crusader but with dark powers instead of holy and perhaps a bit of a necromancer aswell.

What Enemy/Monster Idea Do You Want to See in Diablo IV?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:25 AM PST

Monsters are an important part of any game that involves combat. Each monster has its own defining traits and behavior that the player needs to strategize (or not) in order to overcome.

What monster concept or idea do you want to see in Diablo IV?

Note: The idea could be an overhaul of a past monster or a new type of monster. The monster could also have a combat/non-combat mechanic or it could center on a theme or lore.

    Examples include:

    • Introducing dragons in Sanctuary.
    • An expendable cultist that immolates itself and the field, leaving cursed flames in the area that lasts for a long duration. As it burns, it writhes and screams even after death.
    • A skeletal "tyrant" summoner that sits atop a floating platform and surrounded by a skeletal retinue of warriors and mages. It conjures a guillotine or twisters of bones that cause you to reflect damage to yourself when caught.
    • The incubus (male version of the succubus): handsome, has a slender but muscled body, and a colossal feature. ___ What can you come up with?

Are there higher settings available in the d3prefs file?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:35 AM PST

So to followup on my previous thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/e7l2vp/i_need_help_with_running_diablo_3_at_ultra_low/ now that I've finished moving and am back on my desktop. I was wondering if there's anything I can edit in the d3prefs file to get even better graphics in D3? On my desktop I am running intel i7 8700k, 64 GB ram and GTX 2080, so it should be able to handle most things.
