I expect a great deal of D3 players coming into D2R aren't ready for how rare the top end gear really is

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 06:40 AM PST

Diablo 2's end game doesn't completely revolve around pre-designed Unique and Set items which is a HUGE departure from D3's model, and one of the things so many people love about it. Any day you could find your own super powerful rare item, beating out 99% of uniques or rune words for that slot / class. Drop rates for Diablo 2 are also extremely different from present day Diablo 3, where you're virtually guaranteed access to mostly everything.

Barring botting, a brand new D2 economy without dupes will mean the actual most powerful items possible are actually extremely rare, and not everyone will see them all no matter how much they play, due in part because some of them will just be randomly rolled rares.

This means not everyone will find that super powerful Rare Eth Self Rep Fool's Legend Sword, Eth Fools/Cruels Javs, or a Zod rune or whatever else items are in the super-rare category. And that's an amazing part of Diablo 2 which I hope people who are new to D2 will learn to appreciate. It's one of the reasons it's had such insane longevity.

Building your own characters and beating content with the stuff you find or manage to trade is very rewarding! Don't feel pressured to have to follow builds that include the top end gear, none of that stuff is needed. As a legit D2R player you will not own every item and you will definitely not come across the most powerful items for every slot. Learn to accept that now if you're planning on getting into D2R for the first time.

Is pvp in D2 really a thing?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 08:50 PM PST

Apologies for my ignorance, but I have been seeing a lot of talking about this since D2:R was announced and I've never really seen or experienced any meaningful or competitive pvp in isometric rpg games...

    Trist Runs

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:39 PM PST

For those that haven't played d2 before, Tristram runs are the best source of experience up to level 15 (before glitch rushing [grushing] becomes a thing), and are very common.

I think it's safe to assume that everyone who has played d2 has been in a Trist run where the group goes separate ways and kills mobs too far away from each other, resulting in less experience than if they would if they had stayed together.

With d2r coming out this year and most likely getting some new players, I thought it might be useful to show a map of the proper pathing to stay together, and maximize xp gain.

We're going back to the heyday of D2

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:45 AM PST

I can remember trying to join a sewers game and it filling before I could click on it. Trying to join USEAST-Trading ... or 2... and having to wait to get in.

I tried playing D2X again last season, and I missed the people in channels, the open public games, and there is clearly too many bots, shouldn't even have to mention that... but,

It isn't just about the game getting a remodel, and some QoL improvements. The community is coming back, and I can't wait to join runs, dueling games, and lvling games with everyone. This is going to be awesome.

Fan since 1997; gave up on Diablo III in 2012. Finally bought Reaper last week and just finished Act V, which blew me away with its score and originality. I'm now just 30 minutes into Adventure Mode and... WOW. *This* is the game I wanted 9 years ago: tough but rewarding. It feels like Christmas!

Lessons from ClassicWoW that may apply to D2R

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:38 AM PST

    Lessons from Classic WoW:

In Vanilla WoW, there wasn't a lot of gold to go around. Players didn't reset their talents constantly, have all the best BOEs or be fully buffed with consumables every raid.

In contrast, Classic WoW was populated by a new group of players with a different mindset. Thanks to the modern gaming culture of Google/Youtube/Twitch, minmaxing was now an obligation. Players complained that they were forced to buy gold with $$ because consumables were too expensive.

    D2R application:

Now we have a new generation of gamers looking at D2R from the same modern perspective. They are going to read a guide that says that Griffon's Eye is the best helm for their character. The game is not going to hand them a Griffon's Eye on Day 1. Therefore, we could see a situation where players complain that they are forced to spend $$ on it.

This is how the mindset of gamers has changed in the least 20 years. Playing a game without an item that would make you stronger is a concept that just doesn't compute these days. Not when you have a credit card in your pocket and you realize that $30 is chump change for you.

it is honestly amazing, theyve updated the ui and supports high resolution, they also introduced some cut quests from voice files that werent used in the final game but datamined from the mpqs. i know some of the "purists" disagree with some of the changes but the experience remains very true to diablo1/2. and the "cut" content really is a treasure for those who have watched interviews and know about the development of the game(s).

if you dont have time at least check this guy out, he does a whole playthrough of the mod in a very DNDesque way. enjoy! https://youtu.be/Z24dSOE9XtI

    mod Features:

    • Increased resolution and support for panoramic screens
    • Fully integrated with new windows systems
    • Many user interface improvements
    • New hero classes Barbarian and Assassin
    • All quests which were missing from original game are now implemented
    • Four difficulty levels available in single player
    • New locations
    • New special and randomly generated bosses
    • New spells
    • New character skills
    • New item types and affixes
    • 204 unique items
    • 28 sets with 105 set items

What is the general opinion on Diablo 1?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 11:12 AM PST

So I absolutely adore Diablo on the PS1, me and my friends play it together a lot, I picked up Diablo 3 about 2 years ago and I was really disappointed with how easy it was in comparison. I felt like a lot of the charm from how much preparation was required for each floor and how difficult it all is even with the right spells and potions prepared was pretty much gone. (as opposed to diablo 3 where even after turning the difficulty up, I didn't have to leave the dungeon once in 3 hours).

I've noticed a lot of people expressing disappointment with Diablo 3 but I don't see much about 1. What is the communities' general consensus on it?

Crafting should compliment drops, not replace them (imo)

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 10:00 AM PST

I think crafting should be something that mostly compliments drops (like runewords did). I do not want the best items in the game to be craftable. I would be fine with very few exceptions. But the core of Diablo is finding loot and imo it should be the source of all your gear. Crafting should allow you to craft items that then further improve or allow you to modify the loot you found.

This way, crafting does not devalue drops (like it would if crafted items were stronger than drops), while also being significant and complex enough to be satisfying. I think runewords are the perfect example of that. Crafting them was very satisfying, and they never devalued actual drops, they added more excitement on top of the excitement you got when the item dropped.

Edit: To clarify I mean crafting should not replace GEAR (as in armor, weapons etc), and it should be a way to further improve it, not a way to craft a better replacement for the gear that you find as drops.

    Do Demons procreate?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 06:41 PM PST

Angels don't, but Angels were able to mate with Demons to create Nephalem, this kinda implies that Demons were the half of the process who actually did the procreation.

Imps are also described as their young, but Demons don't seem the type to have babies, I can't imagine a Succubus mother being very protective of her spawn, how would Demons even survive infancy?

Does the Diablo 2 LOD Brady Game Guide Contain All Content From the Original Guide?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 10:44 AM PST

Just curious. Seeing as the games coming up I want to have some reading material for fun/look at the models etc. It's fairly cheap on amazon so I figure I shall collect them/it depending. Just curious if the LOD book includes the content from the original or if I need to purchase both guides, thanks folks!

To succeed with cosmetics in D4.

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 08:08 PM PST

I haven't always been the best at explaining myself but here it goes.

My friend and I were having a discussion about cosmetics and why Blizzard has failed in the past.

My friend made a good point. He said if they just made armor sets that appealed to every possible class fantasy they would make a killing. His example: A Tyrael themed Paladin armor set with matching horse. He said he would pay whatever it costs within reason to look like that.

Then I gave some examples of additional cosmetic sets for every element a Sorcerer wields like an ice, fire and lightning set... Could go on and on for every class.

I think that If they are going to sell cosmetics they need to check all the boxes while staying true to their "embrace the darkness" key pillar.

They are going to need Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch levels of cosmetics covering as many different class fantasies as possible for their cosmetics shop to be successful.

There are a lot of people that hate microtransactions in games and I get that but there are also a lot of people that don't mind spending a bit of cash but there are no good options worth spending on...

TL:DR - If you're gonna put an in-game shop with cosmetics for real money. Makes some cosmetics that are actually worth a damn. You're a massive AAA company you have no excuse.

Make all mercs equally considerable in D2R

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:26 AM PST

D2 has 4 types of mercs. But Act2 merc is used 99% of the time because of the auras, Act3 merc is basically worthless beyond normal difficulty, Act1 merc is used only until Act2 one is available or, like Act5 merc, is considered only with very specific endgame items.

All mercs should be equally considerable.

Apart from simply making the damage more equal, here are some examples of them being more useful/fun like the aura merc is: - Act 5 merc could have different variants that would have the equivalent of aura support: various warcries and maybe weapon specializations (also 2 handed and dual wield). - Act 3 merc could use more sorceress spells on higher difficulties and have his (to us unseen) skill tree with synergies, so the skill damage scales beyond normal. Apart from not worthless damage some merc type skills good for us like the auras could be: cold: shiver/chilling armor, fire: enchant used on the player and lightning: static field/mana shield - Act 1 merc could have a third type; physical, that uses bowazon skills, while the other two would progressively get better fire/cold arrow skills and all types couls have more of the passive amazon skills (except for decoy and valkyrie)

Not necessarily these examples, feel free to comment your suggestion how to balance the mercs, the point is that they should all be more or less equally considerable.

Many that would keep using only the A2 aura merc (even after merc balancing) just grew to like it more compared to other mercs that were worthless, which is alright, that's why I put it as "I don't care I'll just keep using the merc I'm used to, but you do you" instead of a "No keep the rest of the mercs underpowered for everyone because I grew to dislike them for being underpowered in the first place".

(Also it could not be coincidence that the Act 4 that was rushed because of pressure to release early by Vivendi and doesnt have npc dialogues/quests/waypoints like other acts, also is the only act not having a merc. Maybe Blizz North had some plans for an act4 merc but couldn't include it, if so it was hopefully digged up as well by the VV devs together with the rest of the development material that was thought to be lost.)

Anyone who claims mercs don't need balancing is being dishonest, there is a reason everyone is using the Act2 merc.

Diablo 2 order of attack mods?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 07:57 AM PST

Is there any guide that shows in what order attack damage is dealt to monsters? Say if I have crushing blow and it procs on a monster. Is the weapon damage dealt first, and then the health removal from crushing bow, or is it the other way around?

Is it okay that you will never drop some items? (an average player)

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:28 PM PST

Well, I'm seeing this discussions where people are asking for higher drop rates in D2R.

Personally I like the idea that there are items so rare I'll never find, that's even makes me want to keep playing the game, gives an mystical aura about the game and the items and makes me feel more unique when I find or even trade one of these super rare items.
