In-depth hydra guide, LoD and Typhon variations

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Greetings everyone!Season 20 was the birth season of a new playstyle, viable for every content and competing with Archon play style. Archon has been explained in detail in the past dozen seasons it was the best/only viable build. As hydra playstyle is fairly new, I see everyone keep asking questions about hydras and icyveins' guides are outdated and in some places even got wrong information. As of now, I am rank 16 on the hardcore seasonal Europe ladder. Without further introductions, let's get to the guide:

This guide will contain video examples and d3planners for all of the builds, so you can see it in action and have a reference for gearing.Remember all d3planner links contain season 20 and season 21/non season variations. you can choose the build you are looking for in the button left section.

What are hydras? Hydra is one of the spells in wizard arsenal. It counts as a pet, so it gains all pet bonuses. Also, hydra benefits from your attack speed, with higher attack speed equipped, it earns higher attack speed as well. There are 2 types of hydras, one headed which is only the Mammoth Hydra rune and multi-headed Hydras which are all the other runes. By default multi-headed hydras have 3 heads each, but Typhon's Veil set increases that number to 5 heads per hydra.

**When will a hydra stop attacking?**If you get almost 100 yards away from your hydras, they will stop attacking. That is almost one and a half screen. If you cast hydras on their maximum range, they won't detect enemies you haven't seen yet, so even if they are in attacking range, they won't attack the targets you haven't seen.

**Which hydra rune should I pick?**It highly depends on what you are aiming to do, which I will explain in detail. The only rune which is totally useless as for season 20 is Blazing hydra, so I won't cover that rune.

**Does manald heal deal more if it is proc'd by lightning hydra?**Short answer, no. D3planner is not updated well and it just shows wrong numbers. Testings have proven that pet bonuses don't apply to manald heal procs caused by lightning hydra.

**Sub 2 minute greater rift builds:**Sub 2 minute builds are aimed to clear a low greater rift as fast as possible, mostly for upgrading gems for augmentation. As our DPS rises so high, t16 falls into this category as well. So you can use these builds for speed bounties and key farms as well.Sub 2 builds are a bit squishy, so I don't suggest taking out Unstable Anomaly out. If you find yourself dying a lot but the damage is enough for that level, replace nemesis with Ashnagar bracers until you fix toughness problems in your gear. Each hydra rune brings something new to the table, lightning is the fastest rune in rifts they almost one-shot mobs and elites. When they don't one-shot any more, you should switch to either frost or arcane.

    • Lightning hydra: This rune got the least attention this season because it doesn't do any kind of area damage. But it can give you consistent sub 1:30 runs if you do it on the correct greater rift levels.Basically you want your hydras to one-shot everything. This build is a range build because you are constantly jumping forward, leaving your hydras behind you, only stopping/coming back to pick orbs. You use black hole mostly on elites to get more damage.Gameplay footage: https://youtu.be/mGkV7jADqpUD3planner: https://www.d3planner.com/454058642
    • Frost Hydra: This rune is the most picked rune with Typhon's veil because it has the highest DPS and also the highest area of effectiveness between multithreaded hydras. This build is a melee build, so you wanna stay near elites until they die. Usage of black hole is the same as lightning hydra, we just switch to Absolute zero rune because it lasts longer.Gameplay footage: https://youtu.be/Ym5i8j8yXQID3planner: https://www.d3planner.com/461722605
    • Arcane hydra: Arguably the same as frost hydra in speed runs because you are one-shotting everything anyway. No gameplay footage for this build as it is exactly the same as frost counter-part.For gear you go for Arcane elemental damage. You should take Arcane hydra and Blackhole spell steal and the rest are the same as frost hydra.
    • Mammoth hydra: I haven't used it in any of my speed runs as their attacks have a slow animation and it won't kill until it reaches the target. But you can take out death wish out of LoD build, replace Aquila with cindercoat, replace orb of infinite depth with Pride's fall and Etched sigil with Cosmic strand and it will work like any other speed build.

We take cosmic strand in this build because it halves the arcane power usage you have while teleporting and there are no other viable off hands to replace it with. You can take wormhole rune but you will lower your toughness and these builds are already too squishy. One thing to note is that you DONT want your squirt buff to fall. If you see it gone, go to a safe place and wait for squirt buff to reach at least 3 stacks meaning you have the shield from galvanizing ward again.

    2-4 minute greater rift builds:

The only difference is that you take etched sigil to help you kill elites faster. There is already a good build with video footage on youtube for frost, So I don't do it again. here is the link: https://youtu.be/FC5ZYiXvnmY

That build is also viable for sub 2 runs.As for the arcane counterpart here is the video footage: https://youtu.be/pooHdmpIjAMhere is the d3planner: https://www.d3planner.com/837055457You want to kill trash really fast, so Ranslor's folly helps you pull all mobs into one spot and they will take damage even before they fall to the energy twister point.

    Pushing higher greater rifts:

    • Arcane hydra:This video is not mine, but his build is pretty good, I just don't suggest it for hardcore, because if you get stuck between mobs, there is no methods of getting out.In-depth guide: https://youtu.be/cv7LUjHD2T4
    • Frost hydra:I have not used Typhon's Veil for pushing this season so I don't have the decent gear to show a good example. But the gear looks like this: https://www.d3planner.com/368565056That gear is taken from a guy clearing greater rift rank 123 on Europe Hardcore seasonal with this build. The build has the potential to do even higher. All credits go to him.
    • LoD Mammoth hydra:This is the hot build this season, currently giving the highest DPS while providing near immortality. The playstyle is the same as Frost hydra with the exception of this one can face tank way more things than any Typhon builds. As you will see in the video footage, I face tank molten explosions (Even do it on push runs if the situation is good, aka I have channeled for at least 3 seconds)The video footage: https://youtu.be/3avapVTJxjMD3planner: https://www.d3planner.com/609519730Please remember that this is not a push, I am doing 3 tiers lower than my push level. It is aimed to just show you how to play the build in higher greater rifts. Pushing is another story that needs another in-depth guide to cover it in detail.

    Gearing and stats:

As for gearing you want armor on your gear everywhere possible, as wizard is an intelligence class, it gains resistance to all elements from intelligence point. For the gears that don't have resist all, you preferably want to have resist to a single element on secondary stats. As for attack speed, aim for 30 frames. Add as much attack speed until you hit that breakpoint. It is different for different runes, so be careful if you switch builds/runes. You can check your breakpoint and how much more attack speed you need to reach 30 frames, you can import your character to d3planner and check it right there. The rest is really self-explanatory, ask if you had any more questions about gear stats in the comment section and I will add the answers to the guide.

    Legendary Gems:

    • EnforcerAs for legendary gems, you would think Enforcer is the "to-go" gem for any pet build, but that's not completely true for hydras as hydras don't take damage. So it's just the damage increase. It adds a flat damage increase to your hydras, But it has exactly the same number as Bane of The Trapped. So you can change Enforcer for Bane of The Trapped on special occasions I will explain below.
    • Bane of The StrickenThe to-go gem for nearly all the push runs, as it will help you kill the guardian way faster. This comes at a high price, reducing your damage against the mobs you have to kill to reach the guardian. If you kill guardian in 5 minutes without Bane of The Stricken, replacing on of your gems to Bane of The Stricken can reduce that kill time to 2:30-3:00 minutes depending on which gems you have sacrificed. But at the same time, you have lost a bit of DPS against trash. So if the replacement makes you reach guardian at least 2 minutes later than no stricken build, it is totally safe to keep your stricken in your stash. Remember it's all about keeping the balance between killing mobs in time and killing guardian in time and this build doesn't rely on Stricken stacks to actually be able to do something to guardian unlike Vyr build.
    • Bane of The TrappedA really good gem with a really good secondary affix. The slow helps you with survival as chilled enemies attack slower, the chill effect stacks with the chill from frost nova cast by hydras. Also unlike Enforcer, this gem will increase the damage of ALL your spells, especially useful in LoD builds.
    • TaegukThis build is a channeling build, so it doesn't need explaining why Taeguk is a really good choice. One the same level as Bane of The Trapped and Enforcer, Taeguk yields the highest damage output but requires you to channel more and move less
    • Zei's Stone of VengeanceThis gem is totally useless in push runs as you need to keep channeling to keep up the damage, but elites take more than 30 seconds of your time. So you can't keep walking away from them. But it's a good choice for Frost builds in mid-tier greater rifts where you kill fast.
    • Bane of The PowerfulA good choice only for speed runs. Other gems give you more DPS in push runs, and hydra builds really don't need that 15% reduced damage taken from elites.

    LoD build Gem combinations:

    • LoD + Bane of The Trapped + Enforcerin mid-tier rifts as you are killing fast enough and moving a lot.
    • LoD + Bane of The Trapped/Enforcer + Taegukin high-tier and push rifts since you don't walk much, Taeguk provides you with more damage. I personally go for Bane of The Trapped as it boosts my other spells as well and they are noticeable in LoD setup.
    • LoD + Taeguk + Bane of The Strickenin really high push rifts where you start fishing for the dream rift. You are looking for that timed conduit and speed pylon anyway and without it, the rift is not doable in most cases. Still replacing the Stricken with Enforcer/Bane of The Trapped can be considered because it makes clearing the trash faster and you rely less on pylons to reach 100%, but you need good pylons to kill guardian in this case

    Typhon's Veil Gem combinations:

    • Bane of The Trapped + Enforcer + Bane of The Strickenin mid tier rifts. This setup ensures a smooth mob clear while bringing a good guardian DPS to the table. Also, you are moving a lot, so taeguk is not a good choice. But still a viable choice in place of Stricken.
    • Bane of The Trapped + Enforcer + TaegukIn high-tier and push rifts, this is where you need to kill trash as fast as you can. Same logic as LoD gem combination in this tier.
    • Bane of The Trapped + Taeguk + Bane of The Strickenin really high push rifts where you start fishing. Bane of The Trapped is applied to all your frost hydras' attacks, and arcane hydra is nowhere near viable for this tier. Also, this build is squishier than LoD, so you need the reduction in trash's attack speed from the chill effect as a bonus to your toughness. The rest have the same logic as the LoD build of the same tier. You can change Bane of The Stricken for Enforcer here as well, the same logic applies to it.

How don't we die while face tanking lots of mobs?

While you are channeling, each tick of arcane torrent triggers Magic Weapon - Deflection and it grants you a shield equal to 3% of your max HP. This shield is boosted even further by the Ashanagar bracer. So while channeling, even if you take damage, the next tick will regenerate your shield. This shield comes before galvanizing ward, so if you have lost galvanizing ward and hence you have lost your squirt's buff, channeling arcane torrent will give you a shield boost to make galvanizing ward proc again.

What if I keep losing shields even when I am channeling nonstop?

    That means two things:

    1. Your gear is not optimized, you halo of karini is not perfect or you have dropped on of your defensive buffs (Aquila, Karini, Orb of Infinite Depth/Stone gauntlets)
    2. Your max hp is low for that tier, increasing max HP will directly increase the shield granted by galvanizing ward and Magic Weapon - Deflection

Do I need to run back and forth on Guardians as you did in video footage?

Basically you need to keep both orb of infinite depth and halo of karini up, which means going in melee range to get stacks for orb of infinite depth and going range to get the buff from halo of karini.

If the guardian is summoner, and there is a trash 15 yards away from you, you are safe to stay in melee range as that trash will proc karini for you.

Some guardians require you to stay in range at all times, like bone warlock or agnidox as they deal a massive amount of damage in melee range but ALL of their mechanisms are dodgeable when you are in range. Losing 40% damage is better than losing your character in hardcore cases.

There are only two problematic guardians. Perdition and Infernal Maiden, which I am so glad she showed up in the video footage. These two, hit like a truck. As you see in the footage, even with all defensive buffs up, she nearly got my health down to 0 (I didn't dodge her mortars as I knew even if I proc Unstable Anomaly I can kill her) Against these two, if you lose your defensive buffs, they easily take out your shields and they can easily kill you.The only problem is that perdition got a killer charge if you go away from him. So you go away when he is in middle of an attack to reduce the chances of triggering his charge. If you see a white mist beneath his legs, that means he is getting ready for charge and you have 2 seconds to get ready. Do these to survive his charge:

    1. if you don't have karini up yet, go back to get it AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
    2. Face him when he is getting ready for the charge because if you are facing away from him when he charges, he deals 10x more damage, almost always a death/proc on push runs.
    3. When you are facing him and you have karini up, don't move in, as he will charge to you anyway and it's not dodgeable by walking. Start channeling as fast as you can to get the most shield you can get.
    4. If he kills you, it simply means you were pushing TOO high of a greater rift for your toughness. With decent gear, his charge cant even burst your shield on greater rift 150.

    Followers:

If you are hardcore, definitely go for Templar, even if you are always behind your shields and you don't lose hp, bad situations happen from time to time. This season Templar saved me 2-3 times from certain death situations.

    • TemplarThe most annoying of all followers, yet a savior. He brings no damage boost with himself and only comes with heals. So if you like to squeeze more DPS out of your followers, go for the other two options.
    • EnchantressShe has the unique attack speed buff which can help you reach 30 frames breakpoint if your gear is not perfect. So choose her if you are stuck behind an attack speed barrier and she can fix it for you.
    • ScoundrelHe has good CC capabilities, but your hydras already cc cap everything in the rift. But he grants you a 3% damage boost on crits, which is literally on the whole rift.

Just remember, COOLDOWN REDUCTION HAS NO EFFECT ON FOLLOWERS. So don't roll cooldown reduction on your followers.

    Inarius build too squishy

    Posted: 18 May 2020 09:49 AM PDT

So this is my first build, I'm at 530 paragon. I have the Inarius set and like playing it. I've made it to TX and can solo 45GR. However I'm having trouble advancing because I'm so squishy. One hit and I'm dead. Those stupid lasers really get me.

I currently use summon skeletons, blood drain, army of the dead, and a curse.

What can I do to fix this?

Mana spender for Zuni Dart Doc

    Posted: 18 May 2020 07:22 AM PDT

    Greetings.

I have a nice Dart Doc going. I play on console (xbox). Was able to easily clear several GR95 in about 7-10 mins, without coming close to death. I was getting frustrated with fishnado's cooldown and not being able to proc the Zuni damage boost fast enough, or accurately enough, as its very hard to aim at the center of a mob on consol. I went a little crazy and switched to acid rain rune for acid cloud for its HUGE aoe and lingering ground effect. It was so nice to have everything instantly tagged with the zuni dps buff. I def missed the grouping, but everything pretty much melted when I started shooting darts.

I see everyone and every guide only using fishnado or fishwave. Has anyone ever tried the acid rain to proc the set bonus? Im sure of it.. but never see it mentioned. Maybe its just a "console problem" but my clear times went wayyyy dowm.

Thanks for humoring me. Sorry if its a dumb observation. I recently returned from 6 year hiatus. Back then I helped to popularize the DartDoc build. Long before the dagger of darts was introduced, and the huge zunimassas set change. I even got featured on a build article series blizzard did (not sure if they still do it or not...) called fresh meat and greet.. So naturally I had to rebuild him when I hopped back in!

    .

    Thanks for the help.

Switch — is leapquake viable on console?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 10:14 AM PDT

The build looks fun as hell but someone mentioned that it didn't work on console and I can't find much info about the difference.

I've played since D2, D3 on PC at launch (briefly) and just got it on switch. Currently playing a necro and looking for either a Barb or Crusader build that's more physical, direct damage and less kiting around.

edit: this is the LQ build I'm considering

    LF push/group push build

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:33 PM PDT

    Hey!

I'm very new to crusader but liking it a lot so far. When I first hit 70 I threw together some rgk valor build found on icyveins/some YouTube vid with pig sticker. Could barely clear GR75 solo with all pieces mainly due to survivability, even damage was a bit on the low side but it worked. Decided it's stupid to farm mats on my dh and then swap to the crus to improve the gear so I got a valor speed setup on the crusader and it's working well, clears T16 fast and smooth.

Tried going back to building a rgk build and read a bit more in-depth, which was a mistake because I saw so many different variants of the build.

I am at paragon 720 atm (started 3 days ago) and I really want to find some 4 man groups and do GRs with, acting as a rgk. Do I have any chance in finding such groups or would I have to solo push to higher paragon first? If so, what build would I use for either purpose, and how big of a different will perfect/ancient rolls do? My first setup rolled decently well but at the same time gr75 was tough so something is wrong. I'm just so darn weak, any helpers would be highly appreciated.

New barbarian kindly asking reddit for help

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:09 AM PDT

Sup fam, I made my first barb ever this season and so far its been a blast, farming t16 is great fun, I am however finding myself to be EXTREMELY slow during my greater rift pushes, I mean like theres slow and then theres me, im not dying or anything, but GR105 in 10 minutes doesnt sound like decent barbarian gameplay to me, especially at paragon 1273 , so maybe reddit can make my day go better, heres a link to my d3 planner :

Oh and one last thing please , this is my first reddit post in at least 4 years , if you end up peeping my planner and you came to the conclusion that I just personally need to git gud , its an answer i will proudly accept as it will motivate me to up my game =) Thank you reddit !

where do i want to spend my paragon points?

Haven't played for years. Decided to go for Valor Crusader, a few questions

    Posted: 18 May 2020 10:47 AM PDT

    1. Can someone help with gear? Like, what item to prioritize with blood shards etc. Currently doing GR75 but feeling so squishy, and Akarat's Champ has something like 40% uptime. I cubed aquila cuirass for extra toughness. I can barely move the screen if I take that off the cube.

    https://eu.diablo3.com/en/profile/Millennium-2563/hero/133804384

ps: About Convention of Elements buff, does Heaven's Fury still gain the extra damage multiplier if it was cast before the Holy damage type when it switches to Holy? Or should you cast it when the rotation is on Holy only to benefit from it?

    LoD Hydra tips

    Posted: 18 May 2020 09:32 AM PDT

Hi guys! i am currently building a LoD Hydra wiz and there are some questions i cant get answered anywhere.
    1) i see on s.20 leaderboard (EU, but whatever) that everyone is playing stricken as 3rd gem, while on NS everyone is running taeguk. Why running one or another?
    2) what is the correct IAS breakpoint? I checked like 20 threads here and everyone says different things FML. Anyone has a planner with correct item stats?
    3) what follower to pick, and with what skills/gear?

    Thank you very much!
