D2R Sorceress Fan Remaster, made using the 3D model of the sorc from Diablo II

3 month seasons are not long enough.

    Posted: 13 Mar 2021 11:33 PM PST

I've seen a decent amount of discussion on this topic but it really needs to be reiterated again. Diablo 2 wasn't made with three-month seasons in mind.

Three months in, most LoD players will just be getting higher-end gear. The rune drop rates were not made with a three-month season in mind.

Three months into a season, top D2 Classic players will barely be able to sniff level 96. In the 1.09 days, watching and discussing players racing to level 99 was awesome.

Four month seasons should be the absolute minimum that Blizzard should be considering for D2:R.

Can I play in a windowed mode or 4:3?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 03:06 PM PDT

Forgive me, but I've not messed with this game in many years.

My monitor's native resolution is 2560x1440. I don't know the aspect ratio off the top of my head, but it's not the square CRT aspect I last used when playing Diablo 2!

I have maybe three copies of the original game on CD, but wanted to be able to run it without a CD, so I bought the digital downloads of Diablo II, LoD, and picked up the 114d patch.

I understand it's meant to run at 800 x 600. How should I play it so it doesn't look so awful on my wide 2K monitor? I just tried adding -w to the Target field of the shortcut, but . . . dude, that is so, so small!

Is there a good way to get this thing any larger so it isn't warped or going to get me banned when playing online?

    Thanks for your patience!!!

Will we have the option to arrange our spells like D3 in D2R?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 10:16 AM PDT

So, I havent played much of D2 but excited to try the remaster and I remember that in D2 in order to use my spells I have to press a hotkey to select the spell and then right click to use it. Then in a Blizzcon interview one of the developers said that gamepad users will get a hotbar for spells like D3,

will there be a similar option for mouse+keyboard users as well? I would really love this QoL change.

Discussion: Assuming stackable runes, do you believe MID RUNES will become the dominant currency of D2:R?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 10:31 PM PDT

Getting bored of the endless bickering between changing the game vs. not changing it so let me be clear. This is not a discussion over whether we SHOULD have stackable runes, but about what we might see change if they DO become stackable. Assuming it does happen, lets have an engaged dialogue over how we might expect the game to change as a result of it. It should also be noted that the above question assumes that both botting and duping are appropriately managed.

With that in mind, my answer to the above question is.... Yes. Specifically a rune within the Lem - Um range (I'll use Lem for demonstration purposes). Here's why.

When we consider what makes something a good candidate for becoming a form of currency there are a few key characteristics that stand out that I think stackable mid runes have. These are:

Portability - Is it easy to transport and physically manage the item being used a currency?

    • If runes become a stackable item within Diablo 2 this offers portability and ease of use in a way it's in game economy has never really had before. This change alone would render the use of SOJ's an obsolete form of currency. Why would the player base continue to trade using an item that clutters their inventory and storage space, when they can use an item that accomplishes the same exact purpose but is far less cumbersome in the sense that it only takes up a single tile of inventory space? Due to their stackable nature, mid runes would become a better candidate for this function.

Limited Supply - Is the item rare enough that it can retain value over time?

    • In order for an item to be a good candidate for currency it has to have some form of value to the player base. If an item is too abundant, it is no longer valuable and therefor not a good candidate to become a form of currency. However, if an item is too rare, than that also becomes a problem as there won't be an available supply through which players can engage in trade. In order for an item to become a good currency it needs to be rare enough to offer value but abundant enough that it can be accessible to the economies participants.

    • This is actually why I believe high runes are not going to be a good candidate for currency in D2:R. It's is undoubtedly true that high rune drops are rare in Diablo 2. No, I don't want to hear your story about how you found them "all the time", because we have math that proves this. One thing that we can absolutely expect to see, assuming bots and dupes are appropriately managed, is a scarcity of high runes unlike what we've seen before in Diablo 2's recent history. Simply put, high runes will be too rare to be effective trading tools. Not only is the drop rate problematic, but the best runewords in the game require the use of these already scarce items. Jah and Ber runes won't be an effective form of currency when they're hardly seen and when they are they're in an Enigma.

    • High-tier mid runes strike this balance between reasonable drop rates that keep them scarce while also being common enough to create a supply that can be used for trade.

    • Most brilliantly of all, there are already natural "sinks" to help keep the supply of mid runes in check. Since mid runes can be converted into higher tier runes through the cube, and because they can be used in runewords themselves, there are mechanisms in place that can help keep the supply manageable. I may not ever find a Jah myself, but with enough Lem's I can make one myself. The moment I do those Lem's are gone forever, keeping their value in check.

Divisibility - Can the item be exchanged for other denominations?

    • This has always been a fundamental problem of using SOJ's as a predominant form of currency. What happens when I want to trade an item that's worth more than 2 SOJ's but isn't quite worth 3 SOJ's?

    • Because of the rune conversion table, we already know how runes can be broken down into lower denominations. I know for a fact that 3 Fal's are worth 1 Lem. Or that 1 Lem is worth 9 Ko's. So if I know that an item is worth more than 2 Lem's but isn't quite worth 3, than I know what can be offered to fill in that space in a way that gives me the most appropriate value for my item. The rune conversion table by it's nature establishes denominations for runes.

    • Once stackability is introduced this introduces denominations and currency conversion in a way that was never really attainable in Diablo 2. Mid runes would never make sense as a currency in Diablo 2. Why? Let's continue to use Lem as our example currency. If I wanted to convert my 1 Ber rune into Lem's, it would take 1536 (napkin math, someone check it) Lem's in order for me to get comparable value. That's simply not feasible in a game like D2, where each individual rune is taking up an inventory tile. Even if duping and botting never distorted the economy, mid runes can never be a viable currency when you can't trade down for them. The moment stackability is introduced this problem is immediately resolved, since I can have a stack of 10,000 Lems, take 1536 off the top, and immediately convert them into a higher denomination. Same goes for the exact opposite direction.

Acceptability - Will others accept this as a form of payment?

    • In order for something to be a candidate for currency it has to be accepted either universally or at least by a significant portion of the participants within the economy. In addition to all the other points made above, the fact of the matter is that if runes are stackable they will always be accepted as a form of payment. Specifically because they can always be converted into a higher rune. I know my Lem has value, because it gets me that much closer to a Ber, which gets me that much closer to an Enigma. Without being able to stack it that Lem loses value in this sense, because it's far too cumbersome to manage and trade entire inventories of Lem's. No one is going to deal with the hassle of that, and so no one is going to accept them as a form of payment. Once you allow stacking, there is no reason why you wouldn't want to accept it. There is virtually no difference between me giving you 1 Ber, or 1536 Lem's.

In summary, I believe that given the rarity of high runes, combined with the portability, and ease of conversion, that if stackable runes become a feature we will see mid runes, likely within the high end of the spectrum, become the dominant form of in-game currency within D2:R. Honestly, when I began this post I was more or less indifferent to the idea of making this change seeing it only as a feature which added convenience. After having written this out I actually see it a little differently, and hope that the feature is implemented as a way to offer Diablo 2 an in-game economy that's far less clunky and unmanageable. I think adding this feature could really improve the trade experience within Diablo by giving us a way to standardize value for all of the different items that we want to trade with.

Curious about your thoughts on how you see this playing out.

How did you find out about Diablo?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 10:26 AM PDT

I first found out about Diablo when I was at least 4 or 5 years old. My mom was playing it on our computer and I remember I used to watch her for a long time, enjoying it. I soon got very interested in the game. Later, when I got a bit older, I decided to play it myself.

Most effective character build using only budget items

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 08:10 AM PDT

I'm referring strictly to self-found and untwinked playthroughs up to clearing hell.

Personally, I would say that the top three are hammerdin / javazon / summonmancer since they dont need much to be effective. Thoughts? :)

What type of MTX are you okay with for D4?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PDT

    Additional explanation of the options:

    A) None = None.

    B) Only cosmetics = only things that impact your appearance and nothing else.

    C) B + convenience items (like stash tabs) = Stash tabs, character slots, inventory expansions, stuff like that.

    D) B + C + Boosters. = Being able to boost your character to max level like in WoW and many other mmos for example.

    E) B + C + D + Stat re-roll consumable items. = being able to buy items that allow you to re-roll stats or reforge items, things that some people (imo weird people) would argue still are not P2W, but only indirectly impact the probability of gaining an upgrade.. which is really P2W imo.

    F) All out P2W. = Pay to win. Look at most mobile games out there, look at EA games like FIFA (literal casino simulators with a football re-skin on it)

Personally, since I know Blizzard will have an in-game shop no matter how much we might hate it, I'm going for Only Cosmetics. However, that's the line. They already said "We will not sell power" but it really means nothing since who knows what they define as power. Imo convenience items, even such as stash tabs do in fact impact your power, because they impact your efficiency, and efficiency impacts the rate of power growth of your character. I'm strongly against any type of mtx, except cosmetics, I'm fine with only-cosmetic mtx in the case of D4, a game which you will pay for, and pay for expansions. If D4 would be F2P (god forbid) I would accept more types of mtx.

    D2/Resurrected for Mac

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:50 PM PDT

Is D2 playable on Mac or is it just PC? After hearing about resurrected, I'd love to get back into it after 15+ years but I can't seem to find any Mac compatibility on Blizzard's website. Do I need a PC to play classic D2, and more importantly, Resurrected?

    Prestige Rewards, Visual Progression

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:29 PM PDT

    Introduction

I'll be posting a few random ideas for in-game activities I had recently in separate posts, those ideas are not meant to be taken as serious attempts at designing an endgame activity / progression system. I'm mostly writing it for fun. All numbers, items, rewards, and everything like that is just an example. None of the ideas is specifically meant to be a progression system or an endgame system as those ideas are merely the big picture, the generalized core of the idea, with some examples, that can be adjusted, changed or balanced. The main reason for sharing these ideas is to have fun, ideally creating a discussion and to provide some feedback, and I feel a need to share those ideas, regardless of how likely people are to agree with me or not, simply because I believe that variety of in-game activities is incredibly important and even if someone dislikes my idea, they might come up with a better one as a result.

It's also important to point out one thing that applies to pretty much everything I post and I think it's important to Diablo and it is a core element of the game:

    • All functional items (so basically everything except cosmetics) should be obtainable by every solo player and every group player. The reward for playing in a group should be the efficiency. In this post, I'll be talking about cosmetics. So while personally as a selfish solo player I want to obtain every cosmetic in the game solo, I recognize that this probably would take away the meaning and prestige of many cosmetics so I won't argue with that.

    The Idea

In my opinion many activities in the game should provide some form of cosmetic rewards, with some of them being easily obtained, while most of them being in form of very rare drops (like cosmic wings in D3.. which I still don't have.. they probably aren't even real and I'm just crazy.. they can't possibly be real right?! NotLikeThis) They should also be account-wide and carry over to every new season since they would be so rare that you'd probably never collect them all anyway. They could also be tradable. Of course once a cosmetic item drops for you, it's a consumable that you "learn" which unlocks it for your account and destroys the items. You can't unequip it and sell it. This would provide a very big gold sink for collectors and top players because those items would be so rare that their price would be insane. Of course, the rare and difficult cosmetics tied to some difficulty to obtain achievements such as.. being the first in the leaderboards, or doing all the dungeons in the game on the highest difficulty etc should not be tradable, they should be a sign of prestige and achievement. But cosmetics that are just simply rare drops from bosses should be tradable because in addition to a gold sink, it would also make it easier for many people to obtain what they want through trade. Imagine you got some super rare cosmetic that you don't really care about, but you've been farming for a different rare cosmetic and you're just the most unlucky person on Sanctuary, well, you can just sell the one you got and buy the one you want.

It is important to mention that while I have no problem with mounts, wings etc, I do think they should all fit thematically with D4's overall dark art style, be themed around things already seen in game such as regions, factions, maybe monster families, whatever - as long as it fits the art style.. No rainbow wings and unicorns.

The cosmetic rewards that D4 imo should include are:

    • Wings. EDIT: I got so used to D3's wings that I forgot they're probably unrealistic and unfitting in principle.
    • Transmog.
    • Mounts.
    • Pets.
    • Titles.
    • Trophies.
    • Dyes.
    • Weapon effects/enchantments.
    • Maybe small character effects (like in poe but not nearly to the same degree imo).
    • Small part of me wants capes and cloaks.. I don't know why but I really want them, tho it's probably too much.
    • and whatever the devs come up with.

There should be an insane amount of those cosmetic rewards in the game (look at WoW), to give even the most dedicated players in the game something to look forward to, since collecting it all requires an inhuman level of dedication. They should also vary thematically, so that people who might feel like it's impossible for them to collect it all (and imo it should be impossible since many of those rewards would be rare drops and some would require you to be really good at some parts of the game), they (and everyone else) can just find something for themselves and can realistically focus on collecting all their favourite items.

It's worth pointing out that I personally believe vast majority of the cosmetics obtainable in-game should be available or obtainable after you hit the max level in order to not taka away from the regular visual progression you get throughout your leveling process.

There should also be a built-in collection menu that shows you a preview of all the collected and uncollected cosmetics and tells you how to get them (with the exception of some secret rewards which should also be in the game). While I'm talking about the collection menu, I love how the collection menu and transmog works in SWTOR. Basically, you don't really transmog your gear, instead you have an "Outfit Designer". You simply have multiple cosmetic tabs or inventories that you put your cosmetics into each gear slot separately. You can buy more of those outfit tabs with in-game credits (gold) and for real money. And you can switch between your different outfits any time you want. The Collection shows you all the cosmetic items, pets, mounts, toys and everything else SWTOR has, and allows you to create infinite number of copies of the things you have already collected so that you can use them in multiple outfits if you want to (they are obviously bound to you and can't be sold, you simply destroy them if you want to get rid of unnecessary copies). I think this is a great quality of life feature, and I'd love to see it in D4.

Basically the point here is to have so much rewards in the game, with let's say 25% of them being easily obtained by every player, 25% requiring some investment, 25% being dedicated to prestige achievements in the game such as killing X players in pvp or doing all the dungeons in the game, being in top 100 leaderboards or whatever, 25% being extremely rare valuable drops that people need to farm for possibly even years (cosmic wings.. I still don't have them). And of course, in addition to those cosmetics that are only obtainable in-game, there should be a good number of paid mtx because Activision Blizzard wants money and they want to support the game for as long as it makes money, so let's just all accept the reality and let them add as many cosmetic mtx as they want so that they don't have to sell power or convenience (imo in aRPGs convenience = power, because it impacts efficiency and those who are against paying for stash tabs etc, and/or for power should be very vocal about it).
