Are enemy death animations a lost art?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:46 PM PST

Watching the new rogue gameplay, I was very disappointed - not just by the combat not seemingly having any weight, nor the floaty animations - but especially by the plain, ragdoll enemy-death animations and the bodies disappearing right away.

I expected death animations, because Diablo practically invented the idea. Way back in D1, and perfected in D2, the enemies all died in spectacular fashion. Their guts would rip open, bodies would burst and innards pour out, chests would cave in an an angry spirit would scream out, or they'd spin around in an arc and spew a crimson crescent on the ground. No more. Each death is now either a ragdoll float, or a gib into neat little pieces. This is a missed opportunity, in my book. Diablo has always been so strong in the death animation department, really letting their artists take carnage to another level.

On that same note, it was always very satisfying, in D2 (and other modern ARPG's), to look over the battlefield you just wrought and grin at the heaps of flesh and bones and other detritus left over, after a slaughter. No more. Bodies disappear within seconds, leaving no trace of carnage. Maybe there will be a slider for that? If Dawn of War could do it in 2006 and Bannerlord can do it to a much larger scale with 1000 bodies in 2021, then the ultra-well funded Blizz, with a massive team can do it in 2022. Right?

    Anyone else bugged by this?

Blizzplanet (Tomas Hernandez): Are there plans to monetize Diablo II: Resurrected via an in-game shop?

Gallerani: No. No, there's no micro-transactions.

[D2R] Please don't make the drop rates like Diablo 3's. I'd rather have fewer drops and rarer items than constant junk piles.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:10 PM PST

I'm not a purist and would like to see more QoL upgrades and balance patches added to the game, but I don't want drops like in Diablo 3. Part of the fun for me of grinding in D2 was how difficult it was to get some of the best stuff, and how exciting it was when you finally did. This was compounded by the fact the drops were shared, so you had to scrounge a bit, perhaps even trade if you got something someone wanted and they got something you wanted.

I'd be okay with some of the high-level runes being a bit less rare, but I'd prefer not to get something "good" every run. Once you have all the best stuff, there's increasingly less point in playing. Part of what bores me about Diablo 3's grinding is how fast-paced it is, to the point where all I do is hold a button and spam the same skill endlessly, and that enemies die almost instantly, or they kill me in seconds (what's the point of designing all these amazing monsters if they die so quickly I can hardly see them?). But even more so, too much gear and crafting items drop in Diablo 3, and most of the time it's junk. I'd rather have fewer and rarer drops than endless junk piles or "legendaries" that aren't of any value.

EDIT: Also, I watched the deep dive video and interviews in full. The initial release will be the 1:1 remaster with graphic updates and small QoL improvements to appease purists. But they are obviously going to consider taking community feedback for potential future balancing and further patching. That's where my concern stems from on drop rates. The game will have a lot of D3 players who are used to D3 drops that never played the original Diablo 2.

Just gonna say it, screw the purists

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:15 AM PST

Because most people don't know how to read and scream at the title theres a classic option in here, god damn now I know why devs and CMs dont say things and dance around words

I played d2 back then and I've played on every mod (Median, PoD , Pd2). I play d2 all year (different seasons)

What I was excited for resurrected WAS balance changes, QOL improvements hell even a new act or xpac?!

I know we can still make and play mods but this was a chance to bring new life into d2, just make a classic mode for the purists to go play on. I know a majority WANT changes from most people I play with, I really wish they will reconsider the 1:1 being scared of purists. I promise they are the small vocal minority.

For the purists just let them have a Classic mode.

Case in point: log on LoD without mods then log on any mod and see who has more players.

Edit: Got a lot of hate/ love on this, just consider even Dave said there was another expansion to follow LoD, is an X-pac for a 20 year game insane? To most, well yeah, I just think d2 Resurrected would be great to break that wall down. To those saying go play d3/wait for d4, you didn't read what I wrote. If blizzard north could of kept going it wouldn't have died at 1.14. It WOULD OF had an expansion and dave even said MANY times there was so many QOL changes that they couldn't implement at the time, That's what I'm getting at. We're not gonna get into Immortal yes I was just as mad, lorewise it could connect (It's between d2 and d3 for those that do not know). If it was up to me Dave the schaeffer bros etc would be on(with VV), Which quite frankly I don't understand why they aren't, considering the immortal fiasco and how much of a hell of a PR move it would be. To the people saying they should start at 1:1 with the minor QOL, I 100% agree. Wow hammerdin MF sorc -enigma,infinity runewords for 20 years. and only the same builds for 20 more years you want. Mods simply improve what the game was lacking QOL/Staleness. A page out of their book could give great context on the community and thoughts.

It also seems like a lot of you just read the title and skipped the Classic option i listed. If you want classic with updated graphics, great! hence the classic option, there will be a nostalgia cash grab first season, but you purists think one breath into it will keep people around, It'll for one ladder (new players especially for the community.) Or we're gonna go back to square one with nobody, fast. To those who haven't been playing for 20+ years an attacking me, This isn't for you, you're just a couple month ladder launch tourist (It's harsh but true.) To the people giving real constructive criticism, no problem with yall.

And a fun jab at the people who dont want auto gold pickup, you missed that Unique you were dying to have because you didn't pick up gold and it didn't show as a drop yet because of the clutter and ran past it. It's also happened many times to you when you killed Mephisto and he didn't drop anything because he wasn't on the grid. Go re-read the first four words in this paragraph.

The most important thing about Diablo 2 : Resurrection is to prevent bots!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:48 AM PST

It was never the graphics that made me stop playing D2 it was always the fact that bots were running rampart.

I played Diablo 2 during most of my childhood and started playing it again some years ago but I stopped after just two seasons due to bots. 90% (if not more) of the current D2 players use bots, some use dozens which completely ruins the economy, a very large part of Diablo 2 for many players. (I know some enjoy single player and that's perfectly valid too)

It ruins trading a lot because that one shaco you find months into the ladder reset is worthless after bots already found thousands of them.

It also gives people that compete for the ladder an unfair advantage. Bots is the number one complained topic on the blizzard D2 forums.

I wanted to talk about this topic after watching the round table where they discuss D2R and how it's a reskin on top of the old one that keeps all the mechanics from the original game such as fcr or fhr breakpoints, some small bugs and tricks etc. Something I like and support.

However, that might also make it very easy for existing Diablo 2 bots to be reconfigured for D2R especially because that is something Blizzard has to prevent and not VV (Vicarious Visions) and I do not have a lot of faith in Blizzard.

If bots will still be a major problem for D2R it will fail after 1-2 ladder resets because a ladder that is over after a few days due to bots is simply not enjoyable. I just sincerely hope Blizzard is not just taking our money for something that looks good without being willing to invest into upkeep as in keeping it free of bots.

I'm very afraid Blizzard will just take our $40/$60 depending on which version you buy and then run away with it putting all resources into other projects after paying the shareholders and only keeping the lights on as they do with the current Diablo 2 version.

Diablo 2 has always had continuous balance patches in the past etc. D2:R should too, now that there's a entire new team devoted to keeping the game modern and updated.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 04:21 AM PST

Basically all Diablo 2 balance stopped 10 years ago or so, when large parts of Blizzard ressources were restructured or layed off.

If Diablo 2 had continued to get support the past 10 years, we would have gotten endless amounts of more patches with fixes and balance.

D2:R now have full support, and it's time to embrace more balance changes and features.

As we all know, patch 1.14d is FAR from being a perfect patch standpoint in terms of balance, bugs and so on. We should move ahead.

A little comparison: D2 bow vs D4 bow

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:27 AM PST

There are already new QoL features, so there's nothing wrong with adding more.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 02:38 AM PST

We're finally getting a remaster for a game many of us have been playing for twenty years, and people are already complaining about any suggested QoL feature.

Vicarious Visions is already adding some things like auto gold pickup, and purists are also complaining about it even though it's an optional setting.

The game was released a long time ago, there's nothing wrong with admitting that some things are just annoying nowadays.

I've even received threats by some people just for stating my opinion.

I don't know about you, but if I have to pay €40 I'd like to get more than just a graphical upgrade.

I don't want balance changes, I just want to play the game I loved twenty years ago with some of the QoL that mods like PlugY have added.

Diablo II Resurrected will have mod support, but do we really need to rely on mods once again to do the same things they did for the old Diablo II and that could just be added to the game (since it will also be available on consoles)?

Why do you think Vicarious Visions made a tech alpha for people to join?

D2 needs to buff underused skills. No nerfs/content/constant patches needed

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 01:06 PM PST

There are entire trees/archetypes that aren't useable past nightmare. Some due to insanely poor tuning or bugs.

We wouldn't need to touch useable skills, Frozen Orb etc. And we don't need constant balancing updates, just 1-2 patches to help some of the bad skills.

Simply fixing some skills adds far more playability for a game that some people are still actively playing. It isn't going to be some second coming if its the same exact game with the same exact few endgame builds. The game isn't and shouldn't overhaul ALL content. Although I do think adding an additional Uber set would help the PvE aspect of endgame

Will I like Diablo 2 if I've only played Diablo 3?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:52 PM PST

Hey guys hope you're doing well! Sorry to ask a rather stupid question but I'd like some input. My only experience with Diablo has been with the third installment and I genuinely really, really liked it.

I was pretty excited to see the second one being remastered because I never played it. I'm rather new to the Diablo fandom and I'm finding there to be many split opinions about Diablo 3, and that Diablo 2 is radically different from 3.

Are the differences so large that I may end up not enjoying the second one? Or am I just over analyzing opinions? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Hope you all have a fantastic day.

Diablo 3 on consoles is plagued with hacked accounts, pretty much ruining the ladder system. Is there hope for D2R?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:41 PM PST

I am just curious if this issue has been discussed, because while the game looks great, having a clean ladder will be paramount to the game's longevity and replayability.

Simple Holy Grail implementation for D2R

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 04:26 PM PST

I hope they make some sort of feature that will track all the unique items you find, so that one's profile will have a "holy grail tab". Perhaps it could be designed similar to wow's achievement system. That would be such an easy way to add end-game content and implement something completionist players can brag about, without altering the actual gameplay experience.

Obviously this system would need to distinguish between items that you trade for and actually find to ensure legitimacy. Additionally they could make a separate ladder for most uniques found and differentiate between SC/HC.

Anyone who gets Alpha in D2R needs to ask for ladder features in single player

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:39 AM PST

I don't see how utilizing the full game in single player takes away from the original experience. This and the QoL features they are adding is the reason for most mods.
