Diablo Wolcen solves Diablo 4's "overwhelming players" potential problem

Wolcen solves Diablo 4's "overwhelming players" potential problem

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 09:17 PM PST

One of the things Blizzard as a whole doesn't want to do, and is easy to do in an ARPG is overwhelm players by introducing them all these systems and potentially confusing them.

Wolcen solves this issue because it only introduces you to basic features in it's story campaign. That being the ability to gem items, or after you hit act 2 the ability to reroll an items stats with a special item drop.

The genius in Wolcen's design is at the end game, once you beat the story it unlocks a whole new system similar to that of Garrisons in WoW (just not as pretty I guess) in that you have a bunch of buildings you can build that can give you access to new features.

This is such a good system because it's completely opt-in, you decide which system you want to unlock and play around with first and also gives another use to gold, since these buildings are expensive you are going to need a lot of gold to unlock everything, make them more proficient, etc. These buildings take time to build and tie in to doing Rifts essentially, the higher level ones you do the faster the buildings will finish. It flows in what you would be doing anyway nicely with this new system.

I think this system also serves a good secondary purpose as well, which is it can appeal to players who may only intend to play through the story and be finished with the campaign after. By giving them more direction at end-game and something to strive for they may be more likely to stick around longer and since D4 is going to have an open world as well this can only be a good thing.

If Blizzard take anything from Wolcen, I think they should really study how this system works so they can add more depth to the end-game at a nice opt-in pace that doesn't overwhelm players. Without a system like this they may just decide not to do certain systems since they may be stuck on the idea of "how do we introduce this during the story?"

How to relive the D2 glory days?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 07:03 PM PST

Hi all, My friends and I used to play Diablo 2 almost non-stop when we were younger. Now that we're older we don't seem to have as much time for gaming together, but we still try to spend time with each other at least once a summer (usually a long weekend at a lakeside cabin).

My thought was to bring D2 to this year's event, but wasn't sure how feasible it'd be. Are there chromebooks or other inexpensive portable units that would be able to support the software that people here would recommend?

If I can't find a relatively reasonable solution (ballpark of $200/4 people), my fallback plan would be to bring my Xbox with diablo 3. Not quite the same but don't want to totally break the bank :)

    Thanks in advance!

Is Diablo 1 Playable and/or Any Good on Surface Book?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 04:42 PM PST

Hey All. So recently my friend has been telling me about what a blast Diablo 3 has been for him on PS4, and I'm genuinely interested in getting a copy myself to try it out. Still, After looking into the series, I'm feeling pretty awed by the atmosphere and simpler mechanics of Diablo 1 on GOG. Ideally I'd want to try this game out on Mac, but it's Windows only at this time, so I'm wondering if this game would be worth getting for the Surface Book. Otherwise, I may just stick to getting the third one on PS4, and maybe even the upcoming fourth title, since it seems to harken to the classic darker atmosphere. Any input on the matter would be most helpful, though. Thanks.

Is it worth starting to play now at the end of the season?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 09:02 AM PST

Not sure I fully understand how it works, but is it even realistic to get items that will carry over to next season if I just start now?

How I would fix Typhoons Veil Wizard set and differentiate it from LoD

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 06:38 AM PST

The Typhoons Veil set has several issues, gameplay is clunky and damage can be low and its also very slow to play if you want a speed build.

After playing with the Witchdoctor on PTR it inspired me on how I would fix Wizard in a way that is easy to implement for the current staff working on the game.

It is difficult to balance the set in a fun way vs the LOD variant, just giving the set extra damage is good but not perfect and doesn't fix its other shortcomings. What I would propose is that after casting hydra you get your own personalised hydra that floats above your head and it attacks and casts like a normal hydra but of course it is mobile. This hydra is timed (say it lasts for 30-60 seconds after casting hydra) and takes on any of the multi headed runes but does not add to the grand total of 10 hydra heads for the damage and toughness buff of the set.

How will this help ? Mostly it will allow the wizard to move and still do damage so a T16 build would actually work (current TV is so laboriously slow its a pain to play on T16 and you literally cannot play it in a group at all) the set bonus could even increase the damage of your personalised hydra while you are moving to counter the damage bonus of channeling items which buff your placed on the ground standard hydras. This would make for farm more engaging gameplay that outdoes the LOD variant simply due to its new set mechanic.

This was obviously inspired by the spirit barrage Manitou rune that floats above you and does damage. It would be awesome if the wizard themselves changed into a multi headed terror beast with 6 Wizard heads spitting Hydra like attacks but with the limited team it would simply be easier to theft the Manitou coding and animation and replace it with a Hydra model instead (incidentally the "losing a head" animation uses a witchdoctor animation set which is pretty fun.

Simple terms, let the Typhoons Veil set give us an extra hydra that is mobile, a mounted turret that piggybacks a ride on our wizard and spews out damage on enemies unfortunate enough to discover what lies beyond the veil.

    THANK YOU Blizzard!

Please keep up the good work D3 team and get rid of more botters.

There are so many more obvious ones with 1200-1500 hours played on Barbarian along with the ones that have 1000+ hours (they don't run barb 24/7).

Botting has always plagued the Diablo franchise and it'll be nice to see more action taken going forward.

Would you like Energy Shields in D4?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 04:47 AM PST

For those that don't know what Energy Shield is: Energy Shield is like an additional layer of "health" that absorbs damage and quickly replenishes after you have not taken damage for a few seconds. In fantasy RPG's Energy Shield is generally associated with Magic Users, although other classes can get access to that as well, but not to the degree that Magic Users can.

There are some very few Energy Shields in D3, like the Galvanizing Ward Passive for Wizards or on the Molten Gizzard gem, but what I mean if ES would become much more common in D4, like it can roll as an ordinary affix on items and even enemies can have it.

There are various ways of how ES can work: either it is restored instantly after you have not taken damage after x seconds or after you have not taken damage for x seconds it starts to replenishes quickly over y seconds back to maximum.

For example, you have 2000 Health and 1000 Energy Shield.

Before your life gets drained, the damage gets absorbed from the 1000 ES you have.

Now you take 1300 Damage, which means that your ES is down and you are now left with 700 Life.

After e.g. 3 seconds your Energy Shield could start to replanish over 2 seconds back to 1000 ES.

Additional ES could be gained through items, but the Sorcerers eventually could get additional ES for each Level Up, but therefore get less health than other classes per Level, and maybe even get more ES by putting points into a Defensive Attribute that would gives her Health and ES (while other classes like Barbarian would not get ES, but more life instead) and even though passive skills, which also can speed up the ES regeneration rate.

In PoE and Wolcen items do not just give an innate bonus to armor, but light armor gives +x ES, leather armor gives dodge chance/+x evasion and only heavy armor gives +x armor (and in Wolcen you also can get +x to All Resistances). And of course all of them can also roll as ordinary affixes.

Would you like something like that in D4 in one way or another?
