    Diablo 4 Monetization

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:18 AM PST

    Hey all,

    So with my yearly binge of Diablo 3, Diablo 4 comes rushing back to the forefront of my mind. But I have noticed something I'd consider odd, which is the justification of Diablo 4's monetization model. I realize I'm posting this on the Diablo sub so maybe people don't want to hear about any negative speculation, but here goes.

    From my understanding, Diablo 4 will be a full priced game, have full priced paid expansions, and have an in-game cash shop. This is an insult to people loyal to the IP, and it just makes me sad to see it.

    The argument I seem to see the most is "I want continued support for this game so just cosmetic MTX is fine". I absolutely disagree with this sentiment. To me it's being a "Useful Idiot". IMO in game cash shops only have room in F2P games. Diablo 4 isn't free, the expansions might as well be "season passes" and on top of it they're adding a cash shop. "Just cosmetic" is a horrible way to justify developers gutting all cosmetics and selling them back to you. It's anti-consumer to justify even cosmetic MTX.

    Why do I hate scummy monetization models so much? Well I am at a point in life where I can comfortable afford video games or the annoying MTX inside of them. But my issue is the second you add the element of money inside the game, the game no longer is about fun, but manipulating the player to spending as much money as possible while playing. What ends up happening is most of the live service development ends up being what makes them the most money possible, AKA the cash shop.

    We can look at Anthem and we can see exactly this. From 1 to max level you look exactly the same. If you look at any patch notes they fluff a bunch of bug fixes and "Balance tweaks" which look like a large patch note when nothing changes, then they flaunt all of the new cash shop things you should buy for their broken content barren game. Certain companies can do MTX right, but AAA developers as large as EA or Activision-Blizzard cannot, as they are at a point where they can't just make all the money in the world, they need to make more money than before or else they are considered on the decline and lose investors, hence the scummy practices over good games Blizzard has been pulling as of late.

    Another good example as to why the system does not work for the player is World Of Warcraft. Man I love WoW. The idea of "Pay this subscription and our goal is to make a game so good you don't want to cancel it" is a fantastic (And difficult to sustain without a large player base) business model. but take a look at their most recent expansion "Battle For Azeroth". It is well acknowledged to be their worst expansion. All of the Alliance new faction mounts are horses. Boring horses. That's it. But guess what? We will sell you the cut content as cash shop mounts! A record number of cash shop mounts, actually. Battle for Azeroth in general had 1 patch per year (Unheard of), extreme lacking of any content per patch and had the audacity to sell in game cash shop mounts and 6 month subscription mounts to keep you subbed during the lulls. It is a prime example that Blizzard can and will only develop what makes them a direct return when they can justify a cash shop in game.

    I suppose this is going on too long, but I unfortunately have low hopes for Diablo 4 due to their plans for triple dipping on monetization when they have a track record for becoming increasingly greedy with their games. I could bring up the Immortal fiasco or WC3 Refunded fiasco but I'm sure everyone has heard of them and those are both outsourced games anyway

    TLDR; Cash shop is for F2P games and every time I see someone say "Just cosmetic is fine" needs to go play Anthem and realize these companies literally just cut content from your $60 game and sell it back to you.

    I can only imagine if Monster Hunter sold me the armor skins and I looked exactly the same otherwise :P

    Pre-PTR Thoughts on the Barbarian's new Frenzy Set

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:16 AM PST

    Tldr: it should be GENERATOR set, not just a Frenzy set.

    There are all these cool legendaries out there, like Blade of the Warlord that turns Bash into a Fury Spender, Oathkeeper which increases the attack speed and damage of all Primary Skills or Dishonored Legendary which increases the damage of Cleave the lower your current Fury is, so why not make a set that revolves around Generators in general (maybe except Weapon Throw) and not just Frenzy?

    To give this set a twist, it also could revolve around Fury, like e.g. "For every point of Fury you have you gain x% increased damage and x% increased attack speed", similar to how the Dsicipline mechanic on the Demon Hunter's Unhallowed Essence set works. And in this case, the mechanic would actually make sense, because the more angry you get (aka the higher your Fury gets), the faster you attack and the more damage you deal.

    Maybe you could even throw Revenge and Overpower into the mix, which are also melee ranged non-Fury Spending Attacks.

    Just a few ideas on how that all could come together.

    (2) Doubles the effectiveness of all Shouts and Overpower and Revenge (aka Overpower and Revenge deal 2x their damage and Revenge restores 8% life instead of 4%). Enemies under the influence of a Hard CC (not just fear, but also stun, root, freeze, etc) take double damage OR Revenge and Overpower could get the effect of all runes.

    (4) Gain 50% damage reduction for xx seconds after you used Revenge or Overpower

    (6) For all 10 Points of Fury you currently have, the damage of Bash, Cleave, and Frenzy is increased by xxxx%, the damage of Revenge and Overpower is increased by xxxx% and your attack speed is increased by xx% (for x seconds, maybe ???)

    The legendaries that buff Bash, Cleave and Frenzy had to have their numbers tweaked a bit, but still this can work.

    You can make a build completely revolving around Frenzy, but also one that revolves around Bash and Cleave.

    But anyway, this are just suggestions and if there is anything that could be taken from my post, it is that this set should be about all Generators (maybe except Weapon Throw) instead of just Frenzy.

    Thanks for reading.

    About diablo 1

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:10 AM PST

    About farnham, he talks that he had a special ring that looks like the ring of the truth, is it possible to handle it to him? i havent tried this since i sold it on this run, also, does he have any utility after all?

    Is it possible to do all the quests of the game in one run? or its something luck based or related to hellfire version or classic thing? lots of them seemed to be missing for me.

    About search magic/scroll is it any usefull? i didnt understand quite, does it only show the items i dropped but didnt picked up, or where on the ground already, or it can show items that its impossible to get without it? like some magic of dnd (i guess) that you can see stuff others cant see or whatever...

    How to deal with rangers in higher difficults in diablo 1 as a warrior? i used arrows one time and another and never used magic tho, i started playing on nightmare and they already started hitting hard, on normal they already was a pain in the ass, now propably will be gruesome.

    Should i grab magics as a warrior for nightmare and hell difficulties? if yes which ones? (minding i already brought a warrior leveled from normal difficult.)

    I want to do my first goblin hunt and I want tips

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:49 AM PST

    So I saw that when you do goblin runs there are specific routes, builds and all that. What is the most optimal way to do it? Does the difficulty matter? If I do it Torment 1 will it have the same spawn rate of Torment 16? Overall, how should I do it?

    Who thinks they're going to ruin Diablo II now that they've actively ruined Warcraft III?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:11 AM PST

    They've updated Warcraft III (the original) for Reforged, which really downgraded the quality of custom gaming. Do you guys think they'll make a Diablo II remake or use Diablo IV to update Diablo II in a way that'll actively ruin the game? By the way I'm so happy that I didn't buy Reforged.

    Pre-PTR thoughts on the Wizard’s new Hydra Set

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:19 AM PST

    Its nice to finally see some support for Hydra, but I think this set could be better.

    I personally have a few issues with the set, but my main one would be this:

    It looks like the set only buffs Hydra and with the mechanic that you will loose one Hydra Head everytime you take damage, it looks like all you will do (or most of what you will do) is to spam Hydra and nothing else, which imo sounds a bit boring, but also may lead to a very clunky playstyle.

    Another issue I have is that although the number of Hydra heads per Hydra increases, you still can only have 2 Hydras in total active when you have chosen the Serpent's Sparker.

    ===============================

    Here are my personal thoughts on how to improve the set:

    The philosophy behind it would be that – compared to how the set is currently designed – Hydra takes more of a support role (but still contributes to large amount of damage), rather than being a spamable skill.

    It would translate into something like this:

    You could now have 2 or 3 Hydras active at once by default, just with the base skill.

    The base skill needs a buff anyway, since it is too weak when you compare it to other skills, and this would be a good way to do it. So let us have up to 2 or 3 Hydras active at once, even without any items and just the base skill itself.

    ===============================

    The (2) piece bonus of the set (which turns your 3 Headed Hydras into 5 Headed Hydras and increases the duration of Hydra) is fine, but I also would make it so that you can have +2 maximum Hydras active at once (so from 2 or 3 max Hydras to up to 4 or 5 max Hydras).

    ===============================

    I do not like the (4) piece bonus of the current version, which give your damage reduction per Hydra Head, but causes the Hydra Heads to vanish everytime you take damage. Just imagine coming across an elite pack of these ghosts that have these siphoning attack that instantly hits you and continues to hit you over a few seconds. With the way the set is currently designed, your Hydras and with it your damage reduction will be gone almost instantly in such a situation.

    That is unless you wanna funnel this build into Energy Shields to prevent damage taken, but even the Energy Shields have issues with such enemies that I mentioned above, because they quickly deal damage to you which causes the Energy Shield not to start recharging again since they only recharge until you have not taken damage for 4-5 seconds. And during this time you would run around to avoid taking damage and not cast Hydras.

    I just can't imagine this being an enjoyable playstyle to loose your Hydras when you take damage, especially when your damage reduction is tied to the number of Hydra Heads you have currently active.

    Instead, why not simply give you damage reduction based on the amount of Hydras you currently have active and NOT cause them to vanish when you take damage?! 10% (or 12%) damage reduction for each active Hydra (which under my proposal would be up to 5 or 6 when you also include +1 Hydra from Serpent's Sparker) should be fine.

    ===============================

    Now, the (6) piece bonus should imo also include other skills besides Hydra.

    I haven't spend much thoughts on which, but maybe the community can give a few thoughts on it.

    Some skills that spontaneously come to my mind are: Disintegrate, Arcane Orb, Arcane Torrent, Ray of Frost, Energy Twister, Blizzard.

    Skills that should NOT be buffed by this set are things like Archon or Meteor (except maybe Molten Impact).

    So the (6) piece bonus can be something like:

    Each active Hydra increases the damage of Hydra by xxxx% and the damage of Skill A by yyyy% and Skill B by zzzz%, etc…

    ===============================

    That would change the playstlye to where you place your 5 or 6 Hydras and then start spamming another skill, which is imo a more enjoyable playstyle that what I think the playstyle is going to be if the set goes live as it currently is (as I explained above).

    Thank you all for reading!

    If you have additional thoughts, post them here.
